Founded in 1834 as a fur-trading post, Fort Laramie was later bought by the U.S. Army, and then sold to civilians after it was decommissioned as a military post. The federal government proclaimed it a National Monument in 1938, then converted the fort to a Historic Monument in 1960. Today, Fort Laramie is open to visitors and features a post hospital, an administrative building, barracks and more. Address: HC 72, Box 389 Fort Laramie WY 82212
